Fairburn Development

Fairfield Living’s exciting new development is located in the picturesque, idyllic village of Fairburn in North Yorkshire, a village which Fairfield Living have a 30 year connection with. Fairburn is a quaint, relaxed village away from the hustle and bustle of noisy town and city centers but only 2 miles from the A1 and 4 miles from the M62.

The actual site of our new development has a very interesting and important history. Back in 1823, a 330-yard-long tunnel was constructed under the village. The entrance to the tunnel was in Fairburn quarry where our stunning new houses will be situated. The Limestone which was taken from Fairburn quarry was placed in the tunnel and taken under the village to the ‘cut’, a short section of canal connecting with the river Aire, where it was loaded on to boats and taken all the way to London to be used in the building of the Houses of Parliament.

The village cross is believed to have been the spindle on which the brake wheel was mounted that controlled the descent of the trucks as they freewheeled down the incline inside the tunnel. When the tunnel was closed, the spindle was placed in the middle of the road as a reminder of Fairburn’s industrial past and was moved to its current position in the village circa 1900.
